This might be the ultimate ‘Save the Date’ notice you will ever see in the parish bulletin, but it makes sense when you take into account the need to plan ahead to make this opportunity possible. So you might want to set aside the dates of August 30 – September 8, 2020.
Saint Martha Parish and Saint Mary Parish, along with Saint Joseph Parish, Medway are sponsoring an opportunity for a Classic Danube River Cruise in conjunction with the Oberammergau Passion Play. For those unfamiliar with the Oberammergau Passion Play it is a dramatic presentation of the life of Christ that is presented every ten years in the tiny Bavarian village of Oberammergau in southern Germany. The passion play has been presented every ten years since 1633 when the villagers of Oberammergau prayed for deliverance from a plague ravaging Europe and promised that they would offer a dramatic presentation of the passion of Christ every ten years if the village was spared. The plague spared the village and the villagers have been faithful to their promise to this day. The next scheduled production of the day-long passion play will take place from May-October, 2020. The total cast of 1,000 performers in the open air amphitheater are drawn exclusively from the townspeople of Oberammergau.
I was privileged to lead a pilgrimage group with Monsignor Timothy Moran of Medway to Oberammergau for the production of the 2010 Passion Play. We traveled by motor coach as we toured Germany. It meant checking in and out of different hotels almost every day.
