Taking Up My Cross

Lent is a powerful season in our Christian faith. As much as I try throughout the year to incorporate good prayer and life habits, it seems that Lent is the one time when I can actually achieve some degree of sustained conversion. I think it’s because I don’t want to let down the Man who willingly hung on a cross so I could be saved. Thank you God!

I know the 40 days in the desert will be tough, but Jesus will be there as I carry my cross in union with the one He endured for me. With God by my side, I’m sure the load won’t be too hard to carry after all!

Of course this 40 day journey isn’t easy. I’m not fond of carrying my cross. I like my habits. I’d rather spend time in front of the computer or tv instead of sitting quietly with my rosary beads and Bible. I’d prefer to not deny my morning beverage in order to put the money into my Abundant Hope baby bottle. And I’d be much ‘happier’ if I could continue to indulge in my favorite foods and desserts instead of fasting. Bearing the cross of sacrifice can get quite heavy!

Fortunately, Lent helps me to focus more on Jesus and less on my selfish pursuits. I keep my long list of Lenten goals handy so that I can reflect on them throughout the day. I awaken each morning with a commitment to praying more intensely, being more merciful and generous, and denying myself of things that have become unnecessary distractions.
