This Christmas, Pope Francis reminds us, “Every stranger who knocks on our door is an opportunity to meet Jesus Christ” (@Pontifex tweet, Dec.18). Jesus was born in a particular place and time, and his coming to be one with us has changed the world in many ways. Yet we also believe that Jesus comes in each of our hearts and each person we meet, which is why He can say, “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink…” (Matthew 25:31-40). Whether we participate in a special charitable program this season or in ordinary encounters in our neighborhoods, shopping and workplaces, each of us has opportunities to bring Emmanuel (“God with us”) into the lives of others. While none of us is perfect, I pray that collectively our parishes are communities where you feel at home and spiritually supported in this way.
You will be happy to know that the efforts of our collaborative parishes planning and preparing for God doing something new in our communities are beginning to bear fruit!
Go and Make Disciples (our Local Pastoral Plan for 2017-2020) was approved by Cardinal Sean earlier this year, and it was chosen as a strong example to show to other dioceses. It provides a vision and goals for strengthening and growing both of our Parishes, including prioritizing things like: continuous evaluation and improvement of “the Sunday Experience” of the Mass and beyond; also promoting Christian discernment and vocations in the Church. Our third priority focuses on providing experiences for adults and families that will help us continue to grow in our spirituality and faith. In addition to ongoing programs and retreats, we are investing in a powerful new experience called
Discovering Christ (see that article and save the dates!) Check our website www.pwc.church for more info on this experience, our complete
Pastoral Plan, and other opportunities.
Whether you are a regular participant here or visiting for Christmas, I invite and encourage you to maintain the momentum of God's Spirit drawing you to grow closer to Christ - in our parish churches or in your local church back home. The honor of your presence and participation is the gift we are wishing for this Christmas. On behalf of these communities of faith, I wish a Blessed Christmas and New Year to you and your loved ones!
